The Stair Shoppe is a family-owned Calgary business with deep roots in the local building trade. What Mike Shortreed started by hand in the late 1980s, our family still runs today. Same shop, same city, same care.
Mike Shortreed’s passion for woodworking began with his first job in a woodworking shop at fifteen years old. He learned the stair trade in Calgary in the early 1980s, then set out on his own with a hammer, a skill saw, and a strong work ethic, building custom stairs one at a time. As calls from builders across the city grew, so did we — from a single rented bay at the northwest corner of Deerfoot and McKnight to the 12,000-square-foot shop we own today, still on the same street where it all began.
In 1996, Mike’s wife Rose came on board to run the office. She’s handled the accounting, admin, and marketing ever since.
Over the years, hand-drawn layouts gave way to CNC machines and computer-aided design, and we developed our own proprietary Master Stair Builder measurement system. Our tools and techniques keep evolving — all in pursuit of better quality.
Decades on, we’re still proudly family-owned and still in Calgary, building custom and construction-grade stairs and railings for the builders and homeowners who keep coming back.
From precision cutting and CNC routing to assembly and delivery, every step happens under one roof. By keeping production in-house, we maintain quality control, consistency, and a seamless customer experience.
One shop. The same crew at every step: measure, fabricate, deliver.
That's the whole pitch, and it's why most of our work is repeat customers and word of mouth in the trades.
Office 8 am to 4 pm Monday to Thursday. After hours, a Stair Shoppe employee will usually answer or callback within one business day.
Our team oversees every stage of production to ensure your custom staircase is built with exceptional quality, consistency, and precision from start to finish.
From construction-grade, deck, and garage stairs to premium hardwood staircases, steel stair systems, and wood, steel, and glass railing solutions, we build it all. If your drawings still have a question mark on them, send them anyway—we'll help bring your vision to life.
Send your drawings, photos, or a rough sketch of the stair or railing you want to build or update, along with your phone number and email. We’ll confirm receipt and get a quote back to you quickly. Quotes are prepared Monday to Thursday.
