Needed some stairs built for my deck. Mike came, did the measurements, built it, and delivered it at a reasonable price all within a week.

We are building a brand new home and were in need of stairs. While my framer preferred Brydon, it was Mike at the Stair Shoppe who won the day based purely on his being most responsive.

I bought a four rise stair with a hand rail from Stair Shoppe last Thursday. It was ready for pick up on Monday. Excellent wood. I installed it today. It fit perfectly. Well done Stair Shoppe.

/ 01What lead time should we plan?+
From the date of order
  • Construction-grade, deck & garage stairs — 1 week
  • Spindles & railings — 3 to 4 weeks
  • Custom stairs — 4 to 6 weeks
After templating
  • Glass railings — 10 to 14 days
  • Welded Steel railings — 4 to 8 weeks
These are general guidelines and shift with building season and material availability. We confirm a timeframe when you order if a project falls outside our standard ranges.
/ 02Do you handle code compliance?+
Yes. All builds meet the Alberta Building Code, and stairs built for outside Alberta are designed and constructed to their destination jurisdiction's code. Engineer's stamp and inspection are available on request.
/ 03Who site-measures, us or you?+
Site measures — completed by The Stair Shoppe — may be complimentary or quoted per job, depending on scope. We can build from your plans, or from measurements supplied by your site supers or yourself.
/ 04What's your warranty?+
Every stair and railing we build is backed by a 2-year warranty on our workmanship.
/ 05Do you work outside of Calgary?+
Yes. We supply stairs throughout Western Canada and the Territories.
/ 06When do I order my stairs?+
Stairs can be ordered anytime before you need them. For construction-grade and deck stairs ordered from plans or your own measurements, please allow a minimum of 1 week, depending on time of year. If you’d like The Stair Shoppe to measure your stairs, this can be done once the subfloor is on and deck height and width are established.
Keep our lead times for each stair type in mind when you plan.
/ 07When should I order my railings?+
Book railings 4–6 weeks before you need them, then contact us 2 weeks before installation so we can confirm the site is ready and materials are on hand.
/ 08Do you supply temporary stairs?+
Yes. Temporary stairs are available for sale or rent — portable, rough-built stairways for safe access between levels during construction or remodeling. With our roughly one-week delivery on construction-grade stairs, they're rarely necessary unless you need the finished stairs later.
/ 09What's the minimum run, maximum rise, and width in Alberta?+
Residential
  • Minimum run 255 mm (10″)
  • Maximum rise 200 mm (7 7/8″)
  • Minimum width 860 mm (33 7/8″ between finished walls)
  • In non-compliant situations we can build any rise, run, and width.
Commercial
  • Minimum run 280 mm (11″)
  • Maximum rise 180 mm (7 3/32″)
  • Minimum width 900 mm (35 7/16″ between finished walls)
/ 10My existing stairs don't meet current building code requirements. Since they were built under an older code, am I required to bring them up to current codes?+
Once your stairs are approved under the code in effect when your home was built, they're grandfathered in. You can replace them in the same location under that same original code — as long as the new stairs are equal to or better than what's there. But if you change the stair's configuration or location, it must meet current building code.
/ 11How do I measure my stair?+
Six measurements get us most of the way to a quote. See the how-to-measure guide or download the printable PDF.
